GoWiPe Tutorial

Hey guys! As our clan continues to level from our great farming skills, more and more of us are hitting TH9+. Now, I still firmly believe that against TH8s and lower, dragons/hogs are your best options. However, as many of us are finding out, both of those do not really work well against TH9s and above. So different strategies are needed! Today, I’d like to talk about one of those: GoWiPe!

GoWiPe is so named because of its unit composition: Golems, Wizards, and Pekkas. There are many minor variants to it, but those are the primary units. GoWiPe is a 3 star strategy against TH8s (and lower) and TH9s with weak walls. Note that, due to its lack of mobility, you cannot count on getting 3 stars with GoWiPe against tough TH9s and TH10s. Those require even more advanced strategies that we can talk about when we are comfortably 2-starring these tough bases.

The purpose of a GoWiPe is to get your wizards, pekkas, and possibly heroes into the core. The high level strategy for this is:
  1. Deploy golems to absorb front-line enemy fire
  2. Clear trash with wizards behind golems in order to create funnel
  3. Open path to core with wbs/jump spells
  4. Send pekkas and additional wizards to core
  5. Profit

Let’s talk about each point individually.

Step 1: Golem Deployment

First, let’s talk about golems. Golem damage is TERRIBLE. Their purpose is NOT to destroy defenses (like giants). They tank, and that is it. Do not use a rage spell to rage a golem. It’s like taping a knife to a tortoise: still not very dangerous. The golem is a sponge. If you finish a battle with a golem with a lot of life left, you either used it wrong or didn’t need one. Their 30 space is completely wasted if they don’t absorb a lot of damage. Wizards do 18 times more damage for the space! Don't waste spells on golems. If they die, they did their job!

Anyway, golem deployment is critical. Most commonly you will bring 2 golems. Sometimes 1 will work, sometimes you might need 3 (rare). The point is drop them so that you draw enough fire that wizards can clear the buildings you need behind them in order to create a funnel.

Look in the image I attached. All the space between the two cannons is safe to drop wizards.

Sometimes to create a funnel, you only need a single golem. Look at a screencap from a GoWiPe I did this past war:

That single golem was enough to draw fire from all nearby defenses, and the base lent itself to a natural funnel.

Step 2: Create a Funnel

I’ll briefly define funnel here in case anyone is confused. A funnel is to direct your troops where you want them to go (the core!). Wizard/pekka/heros target the nearest structure. So your goal is to clear enough stuff out wide, so that when you deploy those units, going towards the core is the closest structure. You do not want them wandering around the edge of the base. As you can see in the above screenshot, I dropped a few wiz on either side of the golem. These left a line of structures in the direction I wanted the troops to go. Right after that shot, I dropped the pekkas, as the nearest structures were going to be that army camp, then the cannon/archer tower, THEN the AQ altar. Therefore, the pekkas would be funneled towards the core.

In the above screenshot, the guy has dropped enough wiz to quickly clear all the structures behind his golems, and has done it wide enough that pekkas will head into the compartments instead of wandering around the base. Without those golems drawing fire, those wizards would be dead well before they completed their job.

Step 3: Create Path to Core

This step will vary depending on the base layout. It might require wallbreakers, a jump spell, or both. Most generally, there will be 3 levels of walls to get to the core. My preferred method is to break the first level with wallbreakers, then once your troops have gone through that break, use a jump spell to clear the final layer or two.
I
n the above screenshot, you case see that after I funneled my pekkas to the corner where I wanted them to proceed to the core, I dropped my jump spell. A jump spell can actually cover 2 wall levels if they walls are 3 spots apart like they are here. So this actually provided a path straight into the core for me. I could have likely used wallbreakers to pretty easily break into the core on this base, but I’m terrible with wallbreakers and wanted to be sure, so I used a jump. If you don’t use a jump, you can bring an extra rage.

Note: This is more advanced that we need to get here, but realize that against tougher bases, you will actually use wallbreakers to get into the core and a jump to get OUT of the core in order to help facilitate the 3 star.

Step 4: Get To Da Core!

So if you did the previous 3 steps correctly, this should be pretty simple. Get your troops into the core, and rage them to demolish the core defenses and the TH!

That is all the steps to a GoWiPe. I know this has been long, but let’s talk about a couple more topics real quick.

CC: To lure or not to lure

With the CC, you have 3 options. Lure and kill it, don’t lure and lightning them when they group up to attack you, and don’t lure and rage your troops into them. They all have pros and cons. If you lure them, you are wasting a LOT of time and GoWiPe attacks are slow. Very real danger you will run out of time if going for the 3 star. Also, if you don’t lure, the CC troops tend to help pull your troops into the core. However, if you time things wrong, the CC troops can devastate your wiz and pekkas. I did not lure either of my attacks this war. I instead hit my troops with a rage and a heal and it worked well. Do what you are most comfortable with, but have a plan!

If you DO lure, try and pull the CC troops to where you plan to start the GoWiPe, so you can put to use the surviving troops of the CC kill. Witches are amazing at taking out the enemy CC (with some wiz backup)!

Spells

There is a lot of flexibility here. You definitely want at least 2 rage. Whether the rest are heals, jumps, or rage are up to you and the base you select.

That’s all I got! If you made it all the way through, I commend you. Please let me know if you have any feedback or questions.

New War General/Co-Leader

Please join me in congratulating Antilles on his promotion to War General.  It's been a long time coming,  He has been a huge help in wars lately and does a lot of homework to help the clan out.  Glad to have him aboard!

Dragon Attack 101

From the desk of guest contributer Antillies:

Hey all, how are you doing? Now, we are primarily a dragon attack clan and I think we are ready to start really adding some next level strategy to our war attacks. I think with some tweaking of our strategies, the TH7 and TH8s can add a lot more stars, freeing up the big dogs to get more up top.

I realize some of you may know all of this, but I’m hoping this will be helpful to many! So without further ado, here is the example base I’d like to work with.

How would you attack it? I think this is representative of a TH8 base that often gives us trouble (imagine those as level 6 ADs if you want, it makes no difference). What if I told you…. I think a TH7 could 3 star this! :D

Here’s what we are going to do. First, army composition. What I would do is take 10 barbs, 10 archers, 9 dragons. Then, some of Frosty’s sweet sweet level 5 hogs in the CC. I’d take 2 rage and 1 heal spells.

Next, drop 5 barbs and 5 archers at the two Xs.

Why? Because, as we know, dragons are silly creatures. They will attack the nearest building. But they are fat, and ranged, and the nearest building isn’t always easy to pick out, so we aren’t going to give them any chance. We break the circle at those Xs by taking out the collector and barracks/huts.

Now, drop a dragon at each of those army camps near the Xs. They will destroy the camps and then move toward each other. Now, drop your remaining dragons in a line between these two camps. Because of your previous efforts, all of them will move over the walls and start terrorizing the base.

Now, I think many of you would have done something similar to this. At this point, the attack is up to the CoC gods and we hope they hit the ADs. However, instead, now we go really next level.

After a few seconds, your line of dragons will have destroyed the front line of the base, and all the defenses Xed out here should be destroyed:

Now, right where that Dark Barracks use to be? Drop dem hogs!!! Where will they go? Right into the core! (as those ADs/mortars are now their closest target. You might want to check for bombs/springs with BK first!) As they go speeding towards your enemy’s demise, drop a rage and a heal in the core and watch those level 5s wipe out everything in the core. You can even drop a rage in between them so they (and the dragons) get there faster. Poof! All ADs down. Dragons dominate. The end.

This sort of strategy is applicable to many bases similar to this. Note that sometimes instead of hogs you can use balloons. Or maybe, if you are sure you can get your dragons to 2 of the ADs quickly, you triple lightning the 3rd? Or maybe 5 hogs in the CC isn't quite enough so you add 2-4 of your own. Lots of ways to go about it! Thanks for reading, and I hope someone found this a little helpful.

War Debriefing - September 14th, 2014

What a tough war.  We put up a respectable 82 stars.  This appears to be average for us, (81, 82, 84 and 85 stars on our last wars with 35).  They put up an even more impressive 88 stars.  What's even more crazy, they did it with an amazing ground and pound attack.  They put two stars on our #1 with an impressive giants and wizards attack and our #3 with a sweet GoWiPe (Golems, Wizards and Pekka) attack.  I missed the attack on #2 and regretfully replays are no longer available.  I could've swore they were available until Wednesday in the past.  Maybe it has something to do with the update.

So what does it all mean, Basil?  It means that we faced an amazing team that knew exactly what they needed to do to get the win.  2 of their first 3 attacks were against our top 3 and 5 of their first 8 attacks were against the top 5.  They amazing got turned out 11 stars against our top 5.  Typically our top 3 are never attacked during a war, let alone yield a star.  Their is no shame in our performance, we were just beat by an unbelievable team and we couldn't be the giant slayers 3x in a row.

Onto our side, we rarely ever attack their top 3.  I think this is potentially our best room for improvement.  We only left 1 star on their bottom 20.  The past couple weeks I've been working on some more advanced attack techniques and trying to perfect the GoWiPe attack.  I think others around the top have also been trying to do this as well.  I think we need to push ourselves to go against their top players and earn stars on them.  In order to do that though, we need to allow the top 10 the freedom to attack their best and not need to perform any cleanup stars.  Antilles pointed out a reddit article from another clan's war notes, that I believe holds tons of merit for the bottom 20 people in the clan.  "Use first attack for three stars When possible, use your first attack for a reasonable 3-star attempt of a base at your Town Hall level. Your base rank, and the base rank of the opponent, is irrelevant. Three stars win wars and prevent redundant attacks, even if you are attacking down. A 2-star attempt on a base someone else will 3-star is a wasted attack. If it is an easy war, 3-star a base that has already been 3’d for practice. TH7/8 should NOT attack above their TH level until all bases of similar TH level are 3-starred. TH9 attack strategies are difficult. If you are a mid/late TH9, you should be able to pick an early/mid TH9 to 3-star. If you are an earlier TH9, your attack progression should be: (1) 3-star an easy TH9, (2) ask what highly-ranked TH9s cannot be 3-starred, and 2-star those, or (3) cleanup TH8 3-stars at end of war."

As Sparx pointed out earlier during the war, all dragon attacks have a ceiling, once your opponents reach TH9 levels and have 4 levels 5+s air defense the dragons will not get 3 stars and will struggle to even get 2 stars.  Against a TH10 opponent, they more than likely won't even get a star.  I think I saw an attack attempt of ours using all dragons against a TH10 that didn't yield a star.

Just my random thoughts and observations from the war.

MVP for War 9-6-14

Way to go DV JR on a stellar War!

Honorable mention goes to:  David Vance!

War notes from 9-6-14

Well done!

Another great war.  I am very pleased with how this war went.  There is always going to be a few issues with each war, but that is to be expected; nothing runs perfect (though we are close to it).

We had 18 attacks in the first hour alone.  I believe that to be the most for us in the first hour since I have been here.   All but 1 DIBS attack was used in the first hour as we have been requiring these last few wars, which is always good to see.  Of those DIBS attacks 5 resulted in the desired 3 star.  Unfortunately that is only have of the DIBS.  I hope in next weeks war we can improve on this and get 100% in before the first hour and 3 stars on each one.

We also came out strong again in this war. 56 stars in the first 4 hours is an impressive start to any war.  This is something that we have been doing as of late in the past few wars and is a great way to deflate the enemy morale.  Keep up the great work guys and gals.

Now on to a few of the set backs from this war.

I only saw a few things in replays that need to be addressed and a few other minor clan guidelines to be addressed.

1. Farming troops during war.

We have addressed this in the past just a few times and have seen the benefits of mentioning it in the last few wars.  Keeping in mind that each person has there own style of attacking and different level of troops, we need to use the best troops we have possible for the base type we are attacking to gain the desired 3 stars.  Now with that being said there is no hard and fast rule as to what troops you have to take or what troops are the best.  As a suggestions and I believe that most members and the council would agree; Dragons or Hogs are the simplest war armies you can build.  There are lots of variations within these 2 combinations and if you want to see then just watch the replays. Again I want to stress that this is not a hard and fast rule in the clan that you must bring Dragons or Hogs to war, but on the other hand if you are struggling to get 3 stars on your attacks this might be the option for you to at least consider.  I know that it is an expensive army to build, but we are not going to war to gain loot.  (we do that during the week)  We go to war to get as many stars as possible and to win the bragging rights as the best fighting clan out there.

2.  Attacking below your level.

This is a guideline that has been discussed and has been posted for all to see.  If you are attacking below your level  (I was ranked in the 19th spot in this war)  DO NOT attack more than 5 ranks (for me this would have been the 24th spot of the enemy) without asking the war generals or Frosty permission first.  Also as a side note to this guideline when attacking don't look only at the the rank you are placed and directly across the board but also by player level. (I have a lvl of 80)  If I want to attack 5 down from my war rank (19) I need also to consider the level of the player that I plan on attacking.  If that player is a lvl 50....I probably should find a better suited target.

3. Spells for different kinds of troops.

Dragons should have Rage spells, not Heal spells...here is why.

Let us assume you have lvl 4 heal and rage spells, and lvl 2 dragons, and the village you are attacking has lvl 5 Air Defense.

Heal spell facts:
total heal 1,200
heal per pulse 30
pulse frequency .3 sec
total number of pulses 40

Rage spell fatcs:
damage boost 160%
speed boost 26
pulse frequency .3 sec
total number of pulses 60

Lvl 2 Dragon facts:
damage per sec 160
total hit points 2100
damage per breath...(or attack) 240

Lvl 5 Air defense facts:
TH required lvl 7
Damage per shot 190
Damage per second 190
Damage type single target
Range 10 tiles

If you attack and use your heal potion you are healing that 1 dragon mainly that is being targeted by the AD....granted you are also healing all the damage being dealt to the dragons by archer towers and wizard towers and hidden telsas (all minor compared to the AD damage).  You are healing your dragon at 100 hit points per second while that AD is dealing out 190 damage per second, now add in the wizard, archer, or hidden tesla that is also dealing damage and you are way behind in the addition game.

Take the same attack but install a rage spell instead causing your dragons to become faster by 10 tiles and dealing 256 damage per second rather than 160.  You might not be healing your dragons but they are moving so quickly through the village you probably wont need to.

Now there is also a bit of debate hear as to what is the best option...3 rages or 2 rage and a heal (for those of us at TH 8 and down...TH 9 gets that extra help).  This is a debate you must work through and figure out what works best for your type of deployment.

Hogs should have heal spells, not rage...i am not going to get into why as I am already giving a lot of of information here.  Trust me it just works better and if you don't want to trust me ask member that use hogs alot, boazang, cz, oli, david vance, hak, Abdullah Mauddi....they will probably tell you the same.

3.  Attacks that need to happen first.

Beyond the DIBS attacks there are some attacks that just need to happen sooner than later.  If you are ranked in the bottom 15 (when we have 35 in the war) or 12 (if we have 30 in the war) ... especially the bottom 5.  You need to get your attacks in and done with.  We can't afford to wait until late Saturday night to see if you are going to clean up the stars that are missed at the bottom if there are any.  Also with the way we have been 3 starring the lower half of the enemy clan lately you might not have any good options to make a contribution to the over all start count.

Again I wanted to say again.  I am very pleased with the way things went in this war and hop that this sheds some light on your war attack strategies.

You all did great!

CLAN WARS - Rules/Explinations

Now that it seems like we have settled into a good grove with the wars, I thought I should post something "official" on here explaining our expectations for wars and what our clan's policy on them is...

  1. We will start every war at 10:00pm Central Standard Time on Friday nights.
  2. We will keep the clan at no more than 35 in a war for the foreseeable future.  If this changes, we will inform you of it.
  3. If for some reason you cannot participate in the war, you must let us know!  How we will handle this is if you are going to be away and know you cannot participate, we will kick you out of the clan right before we start the war, and then we will immediately send you a clan invite letting you back in.  When you come back, you will still have the same status you had when you left.  So if you leave as an elder, you will come back as an elder.  I will try and keep track of donations if you are a member, but I cannot promise anything.
  4. If we have an odd number of people for the start of the war (31, 32, 33, 34...) then the top 30 will go to war and the rest will not.  So if you are for sure that you want to make the war, I would keep your trophy level above whomever is in slot 31.
  5. DO NOT INVITE ANYBODY INTO THE CLAN WITHOUT FROSTY'S PERMISSION.  We've built a good solid core of people up right now, so I don't want any strangers messing it up.  If you have a friend that wants to join that you think can help, talk to me about it and we may be wiling to add them in.  I just don't want somebody coming in off the street and ruining our chemistry.  With that being said as well, if there is a former clan member that would like to re-join, e-mail me at united.donators@gmail.com  TJcrulz did that last week and I did not hesitate to allow him back in.
  6. When donating to war castles... only donate the following.... LVL 3 or 4 DRAGONS, LVL 6 ARCHERS, or LVL 5 or 6 WIZARDS.  We have plenty of people willing to donate these.  But make sure you say thanks every once in a while :-)
Also, after each war, please make sure you take the time to check out the war debriefings.  The Council members/war generals take a lot of time putting them together and they deserve to have their work read and appreciated.  Drop them a note in the comments once in a while telling them thanks.

Finally, make sure you review your attacks at the end of the wars.  Think to yourself what could I have done better there.  It will help you plan your next attack, that much better.

War Donating

I meant to point this last week and I forgot... Then this week again, I forgot, so i figured it deserved its own post ....

I just wanted to thank oli for busting his hump to upgrade his dragons to level 4 for us. I know in a conversation we had, he said he never used them at all, but he would start upgrading them to benifit the clan.

So thank you for being selfless and putting the clan first in this reguard. I know myself and others really appreciate it, and thoes dragons help.

And a shout out as well to guys like medooley, sparx, straw, bjohnson and others who have always been so giving of their elixer and lvl 3 dragons as well.

War Debriefing - 8-31-2014

WAY TO GO!!!!!!

Guys we came out swinging again and they didn't have an answer. Everybody did great and I am really thrilled!  I hope you all enjoy the bonuses.

MVP this week... Abdullah Muaddi. Great job against some tough competition.

Also, great job again VooDoo.  And shout out to babyturkey for the great 6 star effort as well.

Not much to really say guys. You all did great. Gonna just sit back and relax and enjoy this one. And you should to, we all earned it.

Scratch that... One thing... Use your attacks. Even if we have it won, you need to use both of them.

Also, this war was the war we said good bye to Lihon. Last war he only used one attack, and this was he used none. Lihon was a long time member of this clan. Well his dad was anyway.  Thanks for all you did for the clan Lihon's dad.

Again, great job this week everybody. We are going to go back to 35 for the war. Should be interesting.

War Debriefing - August 24th, 2014

First off... GREAT JOB!  This was a fun war for once.  We came out swinging, and truth be told, I feel we knocked them out in the first round.  3 STAR attacks beginning the war from Spartian, Strong, Voodoo, Ltdan2g7, Antilles, Earl, and Brett right off the bat set us up good for the rest of the war because we weren't having to waste a lot of other attacks down in the lower rankings.  If you got a 3 star attack this war, bravo!  You were the reason we won.

MVP of this war goes to spartian.  Nice 6 star job this war.  Not only were you the first attack and got us off on the right foot, but you made sure we didn't have any mop up work with either one of your attacks.  Well done!

Honourable mention goes to Strong and Voodoo.  Your 6 star efforts were crucial as well.  Spartian went up 2 ranks for one of his attacks, and that is why he got the slight edge.  Both of your efforts were very instrumental to our success and I don't want to diminish that.

Couple notes:

Review your attacks.  See what you did wrong.  If you can't figure it out, ask one of the council members or one of the people who had a lot of success.  We saw a few instances where people fed their troops to clan castle troops.  I'm not going to call anybody out on this, but we preach it after every war.  There is no rush to these attacks.  Use what the generals have said in past wars.  And like I said, review your attacks and learn from them.

Also, I wanted to point out something as well... With about 6 hours to go, we pretty much knew we had this war in hand.  And then a lot of people were going more for the loot bonuses than getting us some more stars. Now, I can't fault you for this, because I can't control who you attack, but I want you to keep something in mind...  The only reason that you may have been in a position to do that, is because of the hard work and efforts of others before you.  Guys like I listed above you got us off to a fast start.  They could have attacked harder targets and got better bonuses for themselves with only one star attacks, but they attacked people at their level and got the clan a lot of hard earned stars.  Weather we are up 20 or down 2, I think we owe it to all the people in the clan, especially the ones that fought early and built up our stars, to try and better our total score on every attack.  Especially for the people ranked in the top 10 or 15.  People did their job down low to make sure "we" don't have to clean up after them, let's make sure that we don't profit off their hard work.  We win as a team, and we loose as a team!

Finally, if you are ranked 25-30... it is in your best interest to attack as early in the war as possible.  Your targets will dry up very fast if you don't.  Please make sure to get your attacks in early if you are in these positions.  It helps the generals formulate a plan of attack for the rest of the war.

Great job again guys... let's do it again this weekend!

War Debriefing

From the desk of General Straw....

Another war, another close one, yet another loss.  This last war was just draining.  We started off horribly slow and then made a contest out of it.  The result was the same.
Inline image 1
Luring Troops Out:
To beat the dead horse another time.  Unless you are doing an all dragon attack, you pretty much have to lure out the clan castle troops AND KILL THEM or you won't get 3 stars.  It's as easy as that.  There's really no exceptions unless you have significantly overpowered troops.  This includes when doing wizards, giants, balloons or anything.  The first two attacks reiterated that but plenty of others followed suit.  Please read the past half dozen recaps for tricks on how to actually lure them and kill them.  Note, making a circle or moon around them is necessary as dragons, wizards or balloons do splash damage and will destroy you when your troops are stacked.  Not luring clan castle troops out correctly will more than likely result in a temporary boot from the clan going forward.  It will serve as a warning to remind you to do this and then if it continues to happen the boot will lose temporary and become permanent.  I hate this as I'm friends with everyone in the clan but I hate losing and wake up calls are needed.

The Cost Of Warring
Wars are expensive.  I lost 1 million this war and it sucks.  My townhall is a day away from finishing and I really could've used that money to buy a new DE drill.  We don't really war to earn a profit but when you do win it definitely helps you recoup the costs.  We war as it provides another fun aspect to the game and it should unite the clan with a common goal.  Everyone needs to be putting their best troops forward to help shoulder the cost of the wars.  When we win wars, we all have a chance to at least make some gold and DE profits.  If you don't have a viable strategy for how you're going to attack, use dragons.  They are simple, they are easy, and they usually always 2 or 3 star everyone.

Requesting Troops:
First things first.  Request troops for war.  I saw a few attacks where people went in without help.  Next, when you are requesting troops for wars.  Ask for the best troops possible.  I saw many times people saying anything or level 4 troops.  This is war, at the bottom levels some level 6 giants or level 5 wizards can destroy nearly half of your opponents base by themselves.  Find the troops that work best for your strategy and ask for high level troops.  The people who are able to donate those high level troops are here for you and want to help you out.  This is soo simple that if I see it next time, you're going to get called out on it.

Getting the 3 stars.  It is soo important for the bottom 50% of our enemy clan to be 3 starred.  These are the must haves to have any shot at winning a war.   It will be impossible to win a war without the 45-60 stars of the bottom people being 3 starred.  This needs to also occur from our bottom 60% of people.  The reasoning is, you need to let the top ten to fifteen people go out and attempt to get 1-2 stars on their top 10 people.  The top 10 people are impossible to fully roll, it just cannot happen, but we cannot just rely upon the bottom stars either.  So we need to have the bottom clean up what they can to allow the top half to their work.  This is why its very important to try and attack within your range for your first attack and then to understand where the clan is for the second attack.  If other clan mates are struggling, we'll need help dropping down and picking up those stars.  Additionally, if you couldn't get 3 stars during your first attack, you really need to look at moving down and finding someone who hasn't been 3 starred yet that is lower.  Unless you just really messed up, or have a drastically better strategy, the ordering system is fairly accurate and as you move up, the defenses are going to harder.

Spells:
Be sure to place your spell in the correct spot.  This means ensuring you're getting the corner of your current troops while leading them to their next few locations.  Additionally, make sure you're actually healing/raging troops that matter.  I've seen a rage be performed on just a few archers.  Really? A few archers, how does that help?  The rage needs should be used to eliminate clan castle troops that have been drawn out or should be used when you have a sizable quantity of troops ready to inflict maximum damage.

Participation:
Everyone needs to use all of their attacks.  As evident by last weeks war.  If you don't fully participate in the war, you won't remain in the clan.  The clan is planning on downsizing, we need to get rid of 3 people which is going to be rough.  Show you want to be here by doing amazing donations, by showing you've learned how to war and that you want to participate.

Dibs:
My final note is on dibs.  If you call dibs on someone, you really have to be ready to attack that person.  We've previously said 3 hours but I would like to shorten it to 1 hour.  Additionally, you need to have an attack in mind.  I wish I had recorded statistics on the dibs from last time.  I know that of the many dibs called, most were done right away and I'm appreciative of that.  However, of the dib calls, many did not earn 3 stars.  Thanks to those that did.  I remember Antilles had an amazing attack on 21 that I didn't think he could do, but the others I remember that Brett, Spartian, Baby were not able to 3 star their dib attacks.  Most of those just ran out of time but its part of understanding a strategy to ensure you don't allow quantity of archers to be eaten by a mortar.

War MVP August 17th, 2014

Congratulations to Aubullah Muaddi and Voodoo for being this wars co-MVP's.  Both of you got 6 stars right around your level.

I also wanted to give shout outs to the following:  sparx, medooley, Antillies, and papaturkey for your 6 star efforts as well.

You guys all did great!

Quick War Observation

Now I am not sure if Straw will hit this in his notes or not, so i figured i would share one of my own observations reguarding the war.

If you have dragons, USE THEM!!!!!!!!!!  If you are attacking on your level, it's almost everytime a guaranteed 2 stars. If you have lvl 3 dragons and use them, you shold have no less than 4 stars. And if you are lucky enough to have lvl 4 dragons, then there should be no reason you arent using them and getting the clan 6 stars EVERY WAR!!!!!

I am guilty of trying other things, but from this point forward I will only be using Dragons for war. If you have them, pair them with rage spells, and get the clan some stars.

Congrats Papaturkey

Way to go on getting 5,000 donations in a season!  Now give the rest of us a chance :-). Seriously, way to go!

Clan Donations During Wars not counted... Official Statment

I know we have talked about this is the past, but for any questions as to "why don't I get credit for my donations in War Castles?" Here is why...

Troop donations made in Clan Wars will not count toward the Friend In Need achievement (or yield XP). There are a number of reasons for this which I will explain right here:

We’d like to make sure your clan mates donate Clan War troops for a single purpose: to win the War. We want Clashers to be motivated by the cause, and not for gems and achievements, as we believe not doing so would encourage people to donate troops that nobody needs. We’re not saying that every player would donate troops without consideration (most Clashers are loyal) but many would give away the cheapest troops available (like Goblins) simply to climb the achievement ladder.
Now that you can drop unwanted Clan Troops, this would be far too easy to exploit, especially given that there in Clan Wars, there is no cool down period between donations.

Again, most Clashers honor sportsmanlike behavior, but there are players who make the most of loopholes. We don’t want fair players to feel like they’re getting the raw end of the deal. We believe this to be a reasonable resolution.

War Debriefing - August 10th, 2014

From the desk of General Papaturkey....

What a horrible ending to a not so great war.  We should have won that one...though it still would have been close.  It was bound to happen eventually.  We are not perfect, well some of us aren't.  This time we got an enemy clan that new what they were doing.  We had good effort and good participation as always but we just came up short.  Good job Everyone!

First I want to make this point.  No 1 person wins or loses a war.  This is a joint effort from all clan members.  If 1 person doen't attack, yes it hurts the chances of winning and it makes things more challenging.  If 1 person attacks but only sends in a few troops, again it doesn't lose the war for us.  Even if 1 person attacks and gets no new stars or for that matter gets no stars at all we didn't lose because of that person.  WE lost the war.  As a clan WE failed to win.  It is that simple.  We can all run around saying if they would have done this or that, or papa why did you waste that rage spell on the lower half of the village, or Frosty why did you even try to get a star off of their number 7 when we had stars below that had not been captuered, or really Abdullah you came all the way down to their number 22 and got 0%.  Point being this: Every war has at least 30 clan member as a team if I fail, we fail; and if we fail, I fail.  We just had a lot of mistakes and misfortune in this particular war.  Again no single person wins or loses a war.

Second point I want to make has to do with "Dibs" attacks.  This will never work if you aren't ready as soon as the war starts.  For instance Antilles called dibs on #19...Wally either missed the mail about dibs on 19, disregarded the mail on dibs, or accidently attacked the wrong number.  So now #19 was attacked...Butters gets on and want to attack #19 realizing that it had a dibs call but sees that it was not Antilles that made the attack inquires about his option to attack.  He was told to hold fast and wait to see what Antilles does.  Meanwhile Medooley arrives and sees the same #19. a dibs attack, has been attacked but no stars were produced. He attacks then to clean it up gaining all 3 stars.  A short time later Antilles shows with his army and plan of attack at hand only to find that his "dibs" has been 3 starred and not only that it was attacked twice.  At whos feet do we lay the fault or the errors here?  Wally for attacking a "dibs" attack...(could have been an accident); Medooley for 3 starring a "dibs attack that was not his dibs...(hard to fault someone for 3 staring); Antilles for not attacking right away...(he runs on canadian time so you never know when he will show up).  I hear in the back some one yell "BLAME THEM ALL!"  No one is to blame.  It just didn work like we had hoped that it would.  This area of "dibs" attacks will have to have some bugs worked out, so in the meantime please give all "Dibs" attacks a 3 hr window before you go pouncing, double check who actually attacked and then check with the war general if you still have questions,  and last but not least get your "Dibs" done right away for the rest of those waiting to clean up your mess.  ;)

Third thing is war village set-up.  Medooley pointed this out and I want to bring it up again for those of you that missed it.  We need our villages spread out but not to the corners where they enemy can draw our Clan Castle troops to for a killing.  If you have buildings out in the corners pull them in so that when they are killing your CC troops you are at least picking off 1 or 2 archers or wizards with you own towers.  I understand your thinking that if they are way out there then they have to take more time to go get those last few building.  A few archers or mortar tubes killing their CC assasins is far better than a builders hut in the corner.  Spread you village out far enought that they have a hard time geting the CC tropps out of the CC but not to far that they can then lure them out of distance for you to help protect you CC troops with back-up fire.

Fourh thing I wanted to address is the question "When should I attack?"  This question does not have 1 simple answer but it does have a few principles that apply to everyone.  To address this we must first remember that STARS only win or lose a war.  Now for those of us at the bottom your chioce of opponents is quite a bit slimmer than the options that Oli or Frosty or CZ have.  Since STARS are all that matter in a war we need to be diligent in making sure that we have all the stars on as many players as possible.  If you are at the bottom...Daggz this week it was you.  Are you going to get three stars on your equal or the enemies above you???  Maybe is the corect answer.  We sure hope so, but if in fact you are unable to 3 star the bottom to opponents then another clan member needs to attack those opponents and get those missed stars.   So the answer to the question is a seris of questions...Am I at the bottom?  If I wait does that mean that those above me are waiting for me to see if they need to clean up what i was unable to get?  Will my waiting cause me to not have anyone left to attack that I can 3 star?  Simply put:  If you are in the bottom half of the clan please get your attacks in as soon as you can.  There is a team effort here and your part is to do what you can as quickly as you can so that alternative plans can be made.

Lastly I want to talk again about CC troops.  This war we feed more troops to lvl 4 dragons and lvl 6 wizards than any other 2 wars combined.  Time after time while watching the replays (yes Strong I watch them all) the Clan castle never fully emptied, or an attempt was never made to clean it out.  I was amazed at how frequently this happened and to whom it happened to.  This was not isolated to the new members or the members that seem always to have this problem but it was across the board.  (exlcuding all dragon attacks, where drawing out the CC troops is a waste of time)  There were a few great examples of drawing out CC troops from this war though that I wanted to bring to light.  I am not going to point them all out but just a few.  Watch Hak's attack against Mano Deco @ 2hr and 5mins until the war ended...just watch how Hak drew them out...then grouped together and then finished them off.  Another one to watch is Oli's attack against Leo @ 15hrs and 7min until the war ended...hog rider in to draw out cc troops...drawn out and away...grouped...killed....then the best part of the whole thing...1 hog rider back in to make sure that the CC actually cleared....go thing that Oli checked too because sure enough out came some minions and a lvl 6 archer...also drawn away and killed....Oli I really enjoyed watching that.

In closing I want to say that again I have enjoyed watching you all play this game.  Being apart of this clan is and continues to be fun for me and my wife...(she is always saying how she like you guys and gals).  Put this loss behind us and lets win the next one!  hihi David Vance you always suprise me!

War MVP for August 10th, 2014

VooDoo... Great job with your attacks!  You and MeDooley are this week's MVP. dooley had a great second attack that gave us hope there at the end, but it was just too much to overcome!  Congrats to both VooDoo and Dooley for your efforts!

For Daggz

Here is a pretty good Town Hall 5 base I found.  Dude spends way too much time with the decorations.  You DO NOT NEED THEM.  But it's a good way to do things, and where to place traps and stuff.

War debriefing: August 3rd, 2014

What a great war and an awesome 3peat.  I hope we can keep the streak going.  I was nervous after it first selected that team but we not only found a way to win, but to pretty much dominate them.  While doing this writeup for the first time I had a billion thoughts running through my head.  I love winning in wars, I definitely watch as many live matches as possible and think in my head about how their strategy's are great or how I think I could do the attack better.  I realize not everyone is as active as I am though, and I'm actually okay with that.

As much as I'm getting tired of constantly doing the same raid to earn some sweet loots, I love clash of clans and I love this clan.  CoC provides me a method to keep in touch with multiple friends that have moved to different states, it provides water cooler talk at the office and at lunch, and will soon provide great tour guides when I do some international traveling. :-)  It supplies me with hours of entertainment reading the chats, doing raids (even though I'm starting to hate them) and then wondering when I'm going to pass Faulty and Sparx (you both should know I'm gunning for you).  Everyone doesn't have as much invested or the same passion and that's perfectly fine.  I don't think I'd really want to change that about them as this clan just seems to be clicking right now.

Onward to the war.  I cannot say this enough, awesome victory.  We struck first, we knocked them back onto their heals and they couldn't recover.  We had great participation as we used 59 of our 60 total attacks. They were a tough opponent who had really really good bases.   We got slightly lucky that they were horribly attackers as our overall number of stars was down.  The past few 5 wars with the same number of people we were averaging 76.2 stars and this war we fell to 70.  It just speaks to the difficulty of their bases.  We actually left 4 stars on their bottom 10 where the past 3 wars we hadn't left any on the bottom 10.

First, the most obvious thing that's been brought up many times before but I'll beat the dead horse.  You need to eliminate the clan castle troops.  Even if they don't have a dragon in there and just have wizards or archers, those troops will still eat your giants alive if you do not kill them.  Most of the time its quite easy to eliminate these troops as well.  The best way is to click scout on your opponent, click on their clan castle and see the radius that the clan castle shows.  If you can get a troop inside of that radius, the clan castle troops will start to come out.  Be sure you watch how many do come out as you may be required to get more troops in the radius to get them all out.  Then simply lure them away to the corner of the map where the fewest of their towers will attack you.  Use a slew of archers or wizards to dispose of whatever comes out and you're ready to execute your gameplan.  As a caveat, if you are doing an all dragon attack, saving one rage potion for when your dragons face their clan castle troops is known to work best.

Next, I noticed on a couple of attacks the poor use of spells.  Be sure when using a healing or a rage spell to lead your troops.  It's best to find the radius where they currently are and where they will be moving to so that you can maximize its efficiency.  The outer ring of the spell should just be touching where they currently are.   She was able to keep nearly all of her hogs alive as she perfectly placed her 3 healing spells. While I'm discussing spells, be sure to couple the spells that work best with your attack.  If you are using hog riders, healing spells will be the best pairing spell.  If you are doing all dragons, rage is going to work best for you.  Practicing during the week the various combinations is obviously the best way to figure out what works best for you.  Final note is that I'm not sure how much value the lightning spell holds in the wars, just about every clan castle we've encountered in the past month has had dragons or wizards in there.  One single lightning spell cannot kill either of those troops.  1 lightning spell will also not deal significant enough of damage to any single tower.  Just my thoughts.

Hog riders have been nerfed a little bit by big bombs.  If you happen to notice big empty gaps where a big bomb can be on the outside.  Sacrificing just one hog rider to trip the bomb is much much better than having 30 of them go up in the blast.   If you're looking for examples of how to do this efficiently, check out Cz's attacks this past war.

Finally, my thoughts on dibs.  I really wish we had the ability to do some kind of sticky forum thread that would be at the bottom of some frequently viewed page.  I believe that just keeping a list works but I know its possible I may have missed one.  Be sure when you do call dibs that you still try and do your attack as early as possible.  Not everyone reads the clan mail and not everyone is active as you may be.  I'm wondering if maybe we should keep a list on the page or possibly even get a Google+ page.  Things to think about and chime in if you have better ideas.

I feel I could ramble on for another hour and have many more topics but want to leave topics for next go round.

If you want to play COC on your computer

Papturkey sent me this link on how to set it up where you can play COC on your computer rather than your portable device.  I think there are a few guys in the clan using it...

http://www.reddit.com/r/ClashOfClans/comments/1qbolr/tutorial_on_how_to_play_clash_of_clans_on_pc_or/

Keep in mind that I don't know anything about this, so if you have questions, ask one of the people in the clan that are using it.  You are using this at your own risk.

War MVP - August 3rd, 2014

Straw will be writing up the debriefing that I will post soon...

But I wanted to take care of the MVP for this last war... DV+ Junior... CONGRATS!  6 Star and most of all, 8 defenses and they only took 1 star.  Great job!

Congradulations Straw

Congratulations Straw on becoming a member of the Council as one of our War Generals.  the clan is in great shape war wise with both yours and papaturkey's insights.

Papaturkey and Straw will be taking turns with their was debriefings each week.  That was the clan can get a little different perspective from both our generals.

Glad to have you both on the team!

I forgot the MVP last war... Didnt want to forget this time around.  Cwingz for the fantastic defensive effort and papaturkey for his offensive prowess.

War Debriefing July 27th, 2014

From the desk of papa turkey....

United Donators,

What a war!  This is the best war I have participated in to date.  As a clan we were awesome!  We were a real contention in this war and because of the serious efforts put forth we came out with the victory.

First thing to mention before we get to far into this AAR (After Action Review) is that I gave out bad information in the last AAR.

HEALERS DO NOT HEAL AIR TROOPS...this includes dragons and anything else off the ground.  HEALERS ONLY HEAL GROUND TROOPS!

Now that I have made my correction.  Thanks to Straw and a few other for providing the right information we get into this weeks war.

There are really only a few things that need to be addressed this week and only as reminders because as I mention before this was a GREAT war.

1.  Attacking by ranking.

There are 2 things to consider here.  First is your war ranking, for example Oli is ranked #1, Lihon #2 and so forth.  This is what will be referred to as ranking for the remainder of this sub section.   The second thing to consider here is level, again for example Oli is level 108, Lihon is level 114 and so forth.

When attacking in our wars we have a guide line rather than a rule per say, which is as follows:
Attack no lower that 5 rankings below you for the first 12 hrs.

Now I know that this can as sometimes does present an issue for the higher level players or players that prematurely entered into a high Town Hall without maxing out all building before the upgrade took place.  The only thing we ask is that if you desire to or are just unable to attack within the ranking guide lines ask before you go lower than 5 ranking and when you have received the "go ahead" at this point you need to consider YOUR LEVEL when attacking.  If Oli for instance knew that 3 stars or 1 star for that matter where not attainable the request would be made and then Oli would attack someone within a reasonable level of 108 (which as mentioned before was Oli's level for this war).  There is no hard and fast rule for this as we don't want to make this a chore to find a reasonable opponent to attack but please consider the whole of the clan and remember that there might be 7-10 attacks left under you that might be able to pick up those stars and you might, with proper scouting and tactics, be able to go for a higher rank and level enemy village.

That being said...if you are near the bottom of the clan, unless asked specifically please do your attacks as soon as possible so that everyone else is not waiting to see if we are in need of dropping attacks down to grabbed missed stars.  the cut off for the lower part of the tribe is the bottom 10  which includes myself.  we need to do our part as soon as we can so that those above us can have a better plan of attack rather than just assuming we will or won't get the missing stars.  If you wait until the end to make your attacks YOU waited to long.

We also recognize that time zones and vacations and other circumstance might play a roll in this and that is another reason why there is no RULE her but rather a GUIDE LINE.

2.  Drawing out the clan castle troops can be difficult when the clan castle is centrally located.

There are a few tactics that will work in this case....
1. use a giant to march close to the walls or better yet use 2 giants that way you know that one will actually make it there.
2. hog riders usually can get close enough to get them out
3. a giant and a wall breaker.
The list goes on.  There are many options and proper scouting can reveal the best means possible to accomplish this.  Feeding all of your Giants Hogs or whatever else you want to the CC troops is not the best use of your army.  This happened to a few people this week and it looked like frustration from not being able to get them out on the first try resulted in a mass deployment of the giants only to have them eaten by the CC troops.

3.  Lighting potions on CC dragons.

This does NOT work.  if you want to kill a CC dragon then you need archers, wizards, a dragon or a combination of the the as you see fit.  Save your lighting potion for that mortar tube that is pummeling your giants or that rotten wizard tower killing your archers.

4.  War bonus.  (this was not an issue but I still want to address it)

If you are contributing to the CC donations for the war bases or supplying the high level troops that everyone want to take for war you have a legitimate argument for that war loot.  We are all very thankful for you efforts to drop down and clean up what we can not get, but would also like to see you receive some reward for you efforts.  I don't want to encourage war bonus attacking but there needs to be a happy medium here.  Present your case for attacking for war loot bonus and if the war permits it will be addressed by Frosty or his deemed proxy.

5. Special mention!

If you get attacked 11 times in 1 war and only give up 2 stars...that is worthy of a round of applause.  C-wingz  that was you!  I know that part of that is the enemy attacking ability and partly base defense, but oly cow 11 attacks and gave up 2 stars.

6. Let do this again!  I like when we win.  GREAT JOB EVERYONE!!!!

War debriefing July 20th, 2014

Here are some notes from papaturkey reguarding our last war... Couldn't have said it much better myself....

First thing to say is "We won!"

Second thing is they didn't fight back.

I am not sure if the number of 3 star attacks we had against them in the first 4 hrs (9 total for 3 stars), the sheer volume of attacks we had in the first 4 hrs (22 attacks), the fact that the attacks against us by them in the first 4 hrs only produced 8 stars for them, or their poorly stocked Clan Castles.  It could also have been a combination of the 4.  As was said multiple times in the clan chat "How have these guys won 11 wars!"  They were attacking low and doing very poorly.  That and the stellar efforts by Oli, Antilles, mamaturkey..(little bit proud of my wife), and DV JR really freed us up for the win.

A few things to take note of:

1.  In this war that we have never dealt with in a war since I have been around is a thing that Medooley aptly named "Kill box".

For all of you that are unfamiliar with this term please refer to the enemy #27 Lindsay.  As you can see there is quite a large amount of space between the TH and the walls on either side.  This is done for a very specific reason...to put your troops in a box and kill them.  Troy boy found out the hard way on this one.  I am not picking on you Troy as you know but I would like those that are not familiar with this defense style to take a look at why you should not play into their game.  What happens is that every defense building from cannons to archers to wizard tower to mortar and in this case hidden teslas stike all at once one the unsuspecting troops deployed in the "Kill Box".  The troops deployed are hit so fast and destroyed that you almost miss the action.  Quickly you have deployed all your troops and just as quickly they are gone.  The only type or attack that works in the "Kill Box" is an air attack and that can even be questionable depending on strength of defensive buildings.  Again Troy I am sorry that this happened to your attack which would have otherwise produced a magnificent 3 star victory, but I want to make sure that everyone can see this for them selves.  I had this happen to me in the multi-player mode once and lost 200 troops in a few seconds with absolutely nothing to show for it.

2. Wall breakers in conjunction with ... you guessed it Giants!

I hate beating a dead horse but so it seems this horse just wont die.  If you are going to deploy Giants to take out the defenses; which is quite alright to do; please take wall breakers with you, time the deployment so that they survive the mortar fire and wizard strikes, and calculate how many you will need to get through the wall of choice. 1 WB probably wont take out a pink wall...sure it will not off some of the strength but you Giants are still left there getting beat while they beat at a wall rather than a defensive building.

3. Healers don't work on dragons very well.

Healers do heal dragons but not nearly as fast as air defense takes them out.  Healers are best used with Giants, Barb King, Archer Queen, Wizards, and Barbs.

4.  Stars in war.

I know, WE WON!  but let us look at this for the betterment of our war efforts....compared to our last war which we lost i might add this war was kind of a bad one as far as getting 3 stars on the first try.  this war took more attempts on various players than should have been needed to get those 3 stars.  I my self am included in this.  Like I said at the begining of this 9 of the first 22 attacks got us that coveted 3 star goal.  9 of 22....not even 50%.  I am not sure if we were just over confident, had lack of planning, or just simply had a tough time getting the attacks placed right.  We can do better than this!

5. Hogs.

Since the latest upgrade it seems as though our hogs have taken a beating and a turn for the worse.  I still enjoy watching them cruise easily over a wall that would take the whole 2.5 minute for my giants to get through, but with that said...the developer really screwed those poor hog riders out of their victories.  I dont use hogs very often and an playing with them this week to try and gauge how to use them in the future but some of you more experienced hog users might have some hidden gems of knowledge for the rest of us...please feel free to email those thought and tips for deployment to Frosty so that he can get them posted to the blog.  What I have found so far to be true is that if they have a tight base where the traps must be hidden outside the walls the hog are a great tool but the more gaps and spaces the fast my hogs go flying and just vanish from a well placed giant bomb.

I am confident that as a whole we are progressing well together.   I enjoy our war days and watching you all attack.  You guys and gals...(Cz, mama, and Voodoo) are a pleasure to go to war with! Keep up the great work...learn from our mistakes...and get that 5th builder (right antilles, and mama!)

Great Wall Breaker Tutorial

Here is a good video on how the wall breaker works...

Video on how to draw out Clan Castle Troops

If there is any confusion on what we mean by drawing out clan castle troops in wars, watch this video...

War Debriefing - July 13th, 2014

MVP's of this war are the following... Sparx, Antilles, and papturkey!  Great job on getting 6 stars!

I got a good summary from papaturkey on this last war, and I couldn't have said anything better than he did....

(From Papaturkey)

This was a good war.  We had great participation and overall each attack had a decent outcome.  There were a few disappointments like Voodoo's 96% and Medooley's 99% (disappointing in outcome, not effort)) but most of the reasons why we lost is because the enemy attacked very well.  I was impressed this war by the amount of 3 star attacks we got in the first few hours. I think that shows that we are improving and that more planning is taking place on the individual level.

Here are a few things to keep in mind....

1. drawing out the clan castle troops
We did a much better job of that this war than the last however with that said there were still a few attacks that did not accomplish this simple task.  ALL enemy clan castles will have troop in them.  you must use your attacking troops to draw them out and then destroy them or you will be destroyed...it is that simple.

I saw 3 such attacks where this was a problem...not sure that 3 stars would have been achieved anyway but without drawing out the troops it sure wasn't going to.

2. Air defenses.
We saw a lot of air attacks on our bases this week.  That was alot of balloons.  Most of us don't use balloons and honestly I dismiss them as worthless, but this war showed that they truly are not.  Air defenses set outside the walls or placed closer to the outer edge of the fortified center are going to be taken out just as quickly as if you were to place mortar tube there.   These useful tool should be place as close to the center as possible to help defend against the air attack....on the same note there are quit a few that are not even upgraded.  This is also a simple and effective fix to strengthen our defenses.

3. Town Halls inside the walls.
With the new edition of COC that allows us to just transpose our regular base without taking the extra time to place each building there was again 1 town hall placed on the outside of the walls.  Be diligent in making sure that your base is set up properly before the war actually begins.

4. End game attacks.
This is the most important part of the clan wars.  Towards the end of each war the strategy becomes greater and the clan needs to work together for the best possible outcome.  We had quite a few players make, what I call,"sacrificial attacks" in the last 7 hrs to clean up missed stars.  STARS are the only thing that count in a war so if you are not sure where to attack ask.

**** Frosty here... I 100% agree with papaturkey on this.  I'm gonna come up with a plan for our end game... have some "closer" so to speak for the wars to hang back and attack more towards the end. I'm thinking around 5 people.  I'll approach some of our more successful attackers for this, so if you don't get asked, don't take offense please.

5. Compartmentalize your war base.
Hogs, the jump spell, and 3-4 wall breakers depending on upgrade level can take out a wall that is 2 or 3 deep.  you need to make compartments and make it as hard for the attacker to get to each defensive building as possible.  the more compartment the more time and or wall breakers it will take to get through....making less space in the army for archers and wizards and giants....COMPARTMENTALIZE!!!

6. Goblins during war.
  DON'T
